I went and picked up my Brompton right when
Portapedal opened this morning. To my surprise, John McConaghay (one of the US reps for Brompton) was also there. Anyway, I talked with the rep and Al & Donna from
Portapedal and they answered questions I had as well as just talking about Brompton stuff in general.
John gave me the lowdown on what happened with the co-ordination of this year's
Brompton US Championships - which I won't post in this public forum - but kudos to Minneapolis for stepping up! After a quick test ride I high-tailed it back the 100 miles to Tucson (in a car - sorry) to take care of some urgent unrelated business.
When I finally got home, I took the bike out for a few miles (even though it was threatening to rain) along the Pantano Wash bike path. The brommie felt although solid, it's gonna take me a little time to get used to riding it, particularly shifting. The Brooks leather saddle is hard as a rock (as advertised), but I applied some proofide after the ride and it should break in nicely over the next couple of months.

DeleteA new Brommie! I can only hope you enjoy yours as much as we enjoy ours. I have a six speed also so here's a hint on shifting: you can flip both shifts at the same time, i.e., to go from 2 hi to 3 lo, just flip the right shifter up and the left shifter down. With practice (less than five miles), you'll have it down.

Thanks for the tip! I seem to have progressed to flipping both levers at the same time and am getting pretty comfortable with it. I really do love being able to flip the hub (3-speed) lever at a stop light without having to spin the crank.

ReplyDeleteI recently bought my Desert Color M6L from Spain and hand carried it back to Singapore. I aptly named it "Nacho" because it was the name of the only english speaking saleman who served me and also because the color resembles nachos :). I hope you will enjoy many wonderful hours on your bike.
